What Imposter Syndrome Really Is (And How To Overcome It)

10/11/2023

Today I f*cked up. I had hopped on for my weekly lives on Insight Timer (come and follow me over there if you're not already) and I was feeling rushed.

I was rushed because I had started my day, stomping around, doing housework, cramming in a quick walk, I was feeling frustrated. Edgy. I didn't take a moment to calm down.

So then I set up quickly for my live, giving myself all of 1 minute to get on in time (I DO NOT recommend this at all!)

And of course, as I went live, I realised that I had set up something wrong, went to correct it and in my haste, accidentally pressed the END LIVE button.

And that was that: I had ended my live before I had even started! F*CK!!!!

My reaction was a complete melt down. And I literally mean that.

Although I teach mindfulness, calm, peace, I am still very much in practice of this. I will never be perfect, I know this, and I don't pretend I am or will be.

Now my imperfections use to really trigger my Imposter Syndrome.

I used to feel like such an imposter for touting a mission of peace and harmony, when I was so aware of myself not doing that.

Until I read this from Dan Millman in The Life You Were Born To Live:

"What we are here to do, doesn't come easily" This is because what we are here to do, is often what we most need to learn and embody ourselves. That is our soul's purpose is to master these things in this life time"

My soul yearns for peace and harmony: It feels at its height when this is in place.

But my humanness, the harshness of my own reality at times, makes this feel so out of reach, even for myself. This is when I feel like an imposter!

Nevertheless, I know deep down that that is exactly why I'm here:

To teach, to encourage, to continually learn to embody my purpose of more peace and harmony at more and more refined levels.

Your personal and spiritual development is a life-time commitment to constant refinement and evolution.

I say to my clients: You don't just suddenly become amazing and perfect when you get "there" - Your personal and spiritual development is a life-time commitment to constant refinement and evolution.

So, in regards to your purpose (and feeling like an imposter) - You're not going to be amazing at it always!

  • Your purpose isn't something that you are naturally good at.
  • Your purpose isn't something that you are always going to be perfect at 100% of the time.

Your purpose, is part of your human struggle. It is the human experience that you have been placed on this earth to master.

Imposter Syndrome occurs when you deny the flawed nature of your human experience.

Your purpose, is part of your human struggle. It is the human experience that you have been placed on this earth to master.

If you are actively working on becoming more and more the embodiment of your purpose, you are not a fraud - You're a work in progress.

And your work in progress is an inspiring model for continued learning, continued growth and continued expansion, that everyone needs to embrace.

Remember - We are not born perfect.

We are not meant to stay the same.

We are meant to EVOLVE.

And that's precisely what you're doing!

Arohanui,

Nik Chung
